Project Background
Lansdowne Road, a 50,000 seater stadium in Dublin, wanted to adopt green design principles that overcame problems with conventional plumbing systems, whilst tackling the common problems associated with standard urinals.
Conventional urinals that experience heavy usage tend to suffer from the same problems: flooding, bad odours, regular blockages, vandalism and high water and energy usage. This combined with the lack of water capacity usually required to flush WC’s and Urinals at intervals.
The Solution:
The Stadium’s design team searched the market to find a urinal product

Design Criteria
The design of the urinal bowl needed to be in keeping with the premium sanitaryware in the hospitality areas. From a selection process of 18 different products Twyford /WhiffAway’s bespoke offering was the preferred option.

Access
The urinal total access for maintenance purposes, whilst delivering the importance of design. The complete solution
from Twyford/WhiffAway was the only system to have total access from the top, bottom and back of the bowl.

Function
The system needed to overcome odours reduce blockages, improve hygiene and be completely non- hazardous to users. Having conducted trials, the Twyford /WhiffAway solution was the only system that delivered these benefits. Other systems using water, oils, sealing fluids, enzymes and traps were unsatisfactory.

Ongoing support
As a public environment, the stadium’s Management Team wanted the assurances of ongoing service support and continuity of supply. Using our Partner WhiffAway with their worldwide service delivery and quality ceramic manufacture of Twyford, the client felt comfortable to choose our partnership system and Nationwide Network of service engineers.
The Result:
The hospitality washroom areas and their 184 urinals experience constant
usage during event days. The following results were recorded:

Elimination of smells
Bad odours were significantly reduced.

Blockages
There were no blockages reported.

Eradicating urinal water usage
The water was completely eradicated without any detrimental effect to the washrooms urinal hygiene and cleanliness. Annual monetary savings are in excess of Euro 440 per urinal and reduces the stadium’s total water consumption by over 35%.
The Result
The Aviva Stadium is highly renowned as being a pioneer for implementing environmental best practice in the Stadium environment. The implementation of the Twyford/WhiffAway system not only reduced the cost of new build in the urinal area by 68%, but delivers ongoing commercial, environmental and operational savings thereafter.
